Many high-functioning, creative, and intelligent people feel like they aren’t good enough.
When you struggle with imposter syndrome, you may feel:
There isn’t one single cause of imposter syndrome. It can be due to a combination of factors such as your culture, environment, personal experiences, or beliefs formed early in life.
Sometimes, your very identity — how you perceive yourself and your worth — can get closely tied to your successes, achievements, and abilities. This can lead to feelings of perfectionism or being extremely conscientious, making it hard to feel satisfied with yourself or accept compliments. Because you may secretly feel like, “They’re just saying that to be nice.”
Over time, imposter syndrome can weigh you down, holding you back in your career, school, or creative pursuits. You may tend to put yourself down, minimize your successes, and undermine your strengths. You may try so hard — at everything, all the time — that you wind up feeling exhausted, anxious, depressed, or lose sight of the joy in life. Sometimes it’s more familiar to exist in survival mode than it is to feel like
you’re thriving.
Your insecurities may cause you to hold back in meetings or conversations, losing out on opportunities to share your ideas or be considered for promotions. Additionally, you may find yourself procrastinating, due to the constant pursuit of artistic perfectionism.
This imposter syndrome cycle can also negatively impact your relationships. Others may get frustrated when you minimize or dismiss compliments or positive feedback. You may struggle to connect with others because of your self-doubt, leaving you at risk of feeling isolated or lonely. There is a swing between opposing actions—seeking validation and then not being able to accept it.
